Fish Weight Calculator

The most accurate fish weight estimate combines a length and a girth measurement of the fish. Adding girth to the equation helps account for fish health and captures whether the fish is fat or skinny for its length.

Length should be measured from the front of the mouth to the tail. Ensure the mouth is closed and pinch the tail. For girth, measure around the fish at the fattest point.

Ok but what if you don’t have a girth measurement? No problem! Then we recommend correlating fish length to statistical data from a state’s department of natural resources

Fish Length to Weight Charts

This next section is length to weight graphs of popular freshwater fish species that you can use to correlate your fish length to an estimated weight.

This data set is provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation from fish caught and measured in New York State. Length to weight conversations are decent estimates but are not entirely accurate because they don’t account for health of the fish and other factors. Just like humans, fish can be on the skinny side or heavier side based on environmental factors. Also, fish tend to grow bigger in larger bodies of water while the same age fish in a smaller body of water will likely be smaller.

We’ve grouped similar sized fish together to make the graphs easier to read.

I chose to use the data source: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation because they had the most complete data set. I also correlated the data to the Wisconsin DNR’s fish weight estimate data and there was a reasonable match.

Conclusion

Hopefully you found these fish weight estimate methods helpful! Remember, if you don’t have a tape measure on hand, you can mark the length of a fish on a fishing rod, a net handle, or something similar. This lets you minimize handling time on the fish and encourages a safe release while still getting a measurement to memorialize your trophy catch.
